Local TV Ratings Surge During NYC Mayoral Debate


Voter Interest in Local Political Programming Wins Time Period

New York, August 15, 2013 – The not-for-profit trade association of America’s commercial broadcast television industry today issued the following statement from Steve Lanzano, President and CEO of the TVB regarding recent television ratings of the NYC Mayoral Debate:

“On a daily basis, Local Television Broadcasters demonstrate their commitment to the community by delivering the most relevant and topical newscasts that give viewers unparalleled access to the latest breaking and feature news and information that is so important to their everyday lives. Broadcast television’s local community reach and use was highlighted again by the strong ratings generated during the first major televised debate on August 13th between the Democratic candidates for Mayor of New York City, which was carried locally on WABC, Channel 7. Airing an hour before Primetime, the debate delivered a 5.0 Household rating in the NY DMA, more than double the ratings of the next closest program in the time period. In fact, the A35+ ‘voting’ demographic rating was a Primetime-like 3.6.

“The station also delivered thousands more viewers online, through their website, as well as a live blog on the NY Daily News site, and through Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag ‘#ABC7Debates’ which resulted in active trending on Twitter during the debate. Broadcasters throughout the United States have adapted to the needs and demands of consumers by offering their content across multiple platforms and formats, beginning with their television and extending to online and on mobile, including station websites and social media pages. “Even on an average summer weeknight in busy NY, voters again demonstrated just how much they rely upon their local TV stations to stay informed during key political elections.”
